The very words can make me shudder. My experience in the corporate world affords me memories of endless meetings trying to craft a Mission Statement for the company, for a department, for a project. Believe me, if you are reluctant I understand.
In the nonprofit world, mission is everything. Often a group of people are brought together because they agree about the need and value of a nonprofit organization to support some goal or goals. This does not mean they agree about what projects the organization should take on.
The discussion around creating a Mission Statement brings into focus the views of everyone on your board of directors. The discussion itself can be very valuable. Once you have an agreed upon Mission Statement it can be an important filter for evaluating which projects make sense for your organization.
The beginning of the year is a good time to take a look at your Mission Statement.
- Does it still fit?
- Do the projects from the last year fit your mission?
- Does your budget for the current year help you move towards achieving your mission?
